The Heritage Association of South Africa (HASA) Blue Plaque is a distinctive circular marker that celebrates places, buildings, and objects of cultural, historical, or architectural significance.
These plaques, instantly recognisable by their deep blue colour and white lettering, are installed on or near heritage sites to share their stories with the public. Each plaque highlights why the site matters – whether for its architectural value, its association with an important person, or a notable event in history.
Although a Blue Plaque does not in itself grant legal protection, it provides visible recognition and helps to promote awareness, appreciation, and preservation of our shared heritage. The programme is coordinated by HASA and its affiliated local heritage organisations, working in partnership with property owners and municipalities.
By marking these special places, the Blue Plaque initiative ensures that their legacy is not only remembered but also enjoyed by future generations.
